2ND MANIPUR RIFLES, Imphal

BRIEF HISTORY

The 2nd Bn. Manipur Rifles, Imphal was raised on 1st November 1962 by Cpt. L.H. Harnett who was its first Commandant. Ever since its inception, the unit was engaged in counter-insurgency operations against Naga UGs and Mizo-Kuki UGs in the hill areas of Manipur and now against valley based extremists of Manipur.

The present role of the unit is to maintain peace in the areas of responsibility by way of regular patrolling, frisking and checking and assisting Civil Police in counter-insurgency operations. Besides, the unit is providing guards and escorts of VIPs, Officers, Oil Tankers, cash remittance and guarding vital installations, banks and providing manpower to SsP of districts for maintaining law and order.

The unit has a glorious past and tradition of selfless devotion to duty and courage. This is evident from the medals and decorations awarded to the officers and men of this unit over the years.

Welfare

Welfare measures so far taken up by the 2nd Bn. Manipur Rifles, Imphal are as under:-

  1. A new Sentry post No.1 Gate of the unit had been recently constructed and inaugurated on 3rd June, 2013.
  2. Bathroom and toilet facilities for Jawans of 2 MR were constructed and inaugurated on 9th August, 2012
  3. Two Barracks of Jawans now utilised by VIP Protection Group were constructed and inaugurated by the Commandant, 2 MR on 10th September, 2012.
  4. One Mt Mess (Dinning Hall) was constructed and inaugurated on 17 August, 2012 by Commandant, 2MR.
  5. Ponds lying inside the BHQ, which was filled with weeds had been cleared and utilised as a point of water resources for the welfare of the Jawans as well as family members staying within the 2 MR Campus. Over and above rearing of fishes in the said ponds are now going on. The fishes caught from the ponds were distributed to the Jawans as well as deployed at various VIP residents respectively.
  6. One rest shed near the main entrance gate post being constructed this month i.e. August, 2014 for the welfare of the Jawans and family line members.
  7. Tree plantation in around the BHQ itself is also carried out. It is specially designed to respect the mark of a forestation and to mitigate the rate of Global warming up which the world meets today.
  8. Recreation facility:- There is no separate recreation facility of Coy. The personnel availed the facility of the Battalions commonly. Foot-ball/play ground, Basket ball ground, Badminton hall, Table Tennis hall and T.V. hall are available in the BHQ.
