5th Battalion Manipur Rifles

5™ BN. MANIPUR RIFLES, KHONGJARON

HISTORY:-

The 5th Bn. Manipur Rifles was established in the year 1972 vide the Government of Manipur (Home) Department orders No. 5/38/72-POL(2)(A) dated 11/12/1972 Shri D.S. Grewal, IPS (former DGP of Manipur) took charge as the first Commandant of this Unit on 19/12/1972. The Bn. shifted for the first time to Pangei from 2 M.R. on 31st August 1973 and the first batch of 600 Riflemen appointed were sent for basic training at MPTC (the then known as MPTS), Pangei and they passed out on 27/12/1973. The Bn. was again shifted to Uchathol, Jiribam in December 1980 and it took over posts along N.H. 53 at Money, Nungba, Barak, Makru,  Awangkhul and Irang from the 10th Bn. Rajasthan Armed Constabulary (RAC).

Once again the Bn. Shifted to District HQs, Tamenglong from Uchathol, Jiribam. Then land was acquired at Khongjaron peace camp and infra-structures were built accordingly. Thus on the basis of PHQ orders No. 8/44/83/2938 dated 09/06/1987, the Bn. shifted to KhongjaronShri S. Bimalchandra Singh, IPS then DIGP(Ops), Manipur (later retired as DGP, Manipur} laid the foundation stone at Khongjaron on 15th July 1987. The Bn. Headquarter once more had to go back to Uchathol vide orders No. 9/2(0/2002 dated 09/05/2002, But within 2 (two) months, the Bn. was shifted to the present location at Khongjaron in compliance with orders No. 9/2(l)/2002-H dated 12/07/2002. Since then, the Unit has been functioning at this location.

WELFARE:-

 To meet the welfare of the personnel of the Bn. The Unit is running a Unit Canteen, which is a fair price shop. All kind of essential utilities are made available in this Canteen. The Unit is also running a Unit School for small children of the family line, from Nursery to Class- V, Teachers for the School are also engaged from Educated and un-employed children of the personnel and the women of the family line. The unit also provide School Bus with a normal fees of Rs. 200/- per child for the School going children of the family line to Tamenglong Headquarters which is 5 Kms away from BHQ,. Barber shop and Tailoring shop are also maintain within the Bn. premise.

From time to time Medical teams from District Hospital, District Malaria Department, District HIV/AIDS and TB Staffs are contacted and conduct free Medical camps at BHQ, as no Doctors are posted in this unit for the past 5/6 years.

One month Yoga class was held by hiring Yoga teachers and Meditation was also taught to the personnel. Counseling for the personnel is also done as the need arises by the Senior Officers of the Bn.

RAISING DAY CELEBRATION :-

The Bn. Raising Day is always celebrated with cleanliness competition of the family lines, Jawans Barracks and all the Bn. Establishment. On this day, Best disciplined award for the jawans and best student of the year award for students of the Unit School is also given out. Games & Sports are organised between various ranks of the personnel and for children of the Bn. family lines. The celebration is culminated with a grand feast for all.
