On 07/02/1997 Rfn. No. 8333 H. Ashuli Mao was detailed on escort duty of Dy. CO, 8th MR
who was detailed as Zonal Officer for General Election, 1997. While returning from duty after collecting all
the polled ballot boxes and other election materials
from Waikhong, some unknown militant groups suspected to be UNLF laid
ambush on the escort team in the meadow between Yelangkhangpokpi and Langmeidong. The escort party also
retaliated. During the ambush, he sustained bullet injury and succumbed to
his injury at the spot. |
