Manipur Police

1st Battalion Manipur Rifles

The 1st Manipur Rifles, Imphal

BRIEF HISTORY

The 1st Bn. Manipur Rifles, Imphal raised in the year 1892 is the oldest battalion of the Manipur State Police Force. The history of this battalion originated from the famous Khongjom War of Manipur, 1892. In this war, the British army defeated the forces of the Maharaja of Manipur. Thereafter, the force of the Maharaja of Manipur was replaced by the State Military Police in 1892. Mr. FL Crawford, a well-trained British Officer was the first Commanding Officer of the State Military Police. During the 1st World War, the State Military Police was attached with the Garhwal Rifles for training and other tactical knowledge.

During World War-II, the Hqs. of the Combined 4 Corps and 15 Corps under Lt. General Slim were located in Imphal, and the State Military was assigned the task of guarding the palace of the State of Manipur from Japanese attack.

After Independence, the State Military Police was renamed as the 1st Bn. Manipur Rifles on 22/10/1948. The Battalion was entrusted with the task of maintaining law and order, fighting insurgency and Naga hostiles in the hill areas of Manipur.

In the year 1959, the battalion was again re-organized on the pattern of Border Security Force (BSF) and was given more fire power like 3” Mortar and MMG. Since its inception, the personnel of the battalion were allowed to wear the Olive Green (OG) uniform similar to that of the Indian Army.

The battalion is located at the heart of Imphal town. Because of its strategic location, all important National as well as State functions are held within the battalion campus. Besides assisting the District Police in the maintenance of law and order, Personnel of this battalion are deployed as guards and escorts of a number of VIPs of the State.
